DIVERSITY AND COMMUNITY COHESION

Background

What is community cohesion?
Community cohesion is working towards a society in which there is a common vision and sense of belonging by all communities; a society in which the diversity of people’s backgrounds and circumstances is appreciated and valued; a society in which similar life opportunities are available to all; and a society in which strong and positive relationships exist and continue to be developed in the workplace, in schools and in the wider community.


From September 2007 schools came under a new duty to promote community cohesion therefore it is now mandatory to focus on cohesion and diversity bringing together the similarities that we share and celebrating what makes us different in a positive way.

 

 

 

Sessions to include:

1. Introduction to difference – ‘Please Stand up’ -  A practical exercise that illustrates how a group can be bound by one similarity.

2. Quiz Time - Covering legislation, religion and cultural information, historical aspect of diversity, significant contributions from communities and how diversity is portrayed in the mass media and news.

3. Stereotypes and Assumptions- Examining assumptions, perceptions and judgements.


4. Group exercise - Similarities, shared values and celebrating differences.


Learning Outcomes:  Ultimately this session will equip and prepare students so they are more aware of diversity and the six strands that are currently legislated for -  i.e. Race, Gender, Disability, Sexual Orientation, Religion and Age and give them an insight into how diversity and cohesion impacts on everyday life.


Additional modules that can be added: 


5.  How far have we come? (45 mins)
Exercise in planning progression in Diversity and presentations - This session focuses on:-

  • Why Diversity is so important within society?
  • How did we get here?




6. Bullying, Prejudice and Discrimination (60 mins)

  • Examining prejudices, discrimination and how bullying develops
  • Ground breaking thought provoking video.

 



AIMS & OBJECTIVES:
This session aims to:-

  • Encourage students to think about how difference can be appreciated more
  • Examine how it impacts on their school life and their family life
  • Prepare them for diversity and cohesion in the ‘real world’,  focusing on how it impacts in the professional world
